Join us for a hike on May 4 at Jack London SHP, 9:45 a.m.!

Hello Hikers!

Mark your calendars for May 4th when we’ll be meeting at Jack London State Park for our next hike. This hike, approximately 5 ½ miles, will take us around the lake, through some of the old orchards, and over to the ancient redwood tree. (Visit our website www.feb22.members.sonic.net for a view of the tree!) We’ll stop and have lunch there, and then head back to the parking lot via the Quarry Trail. This hike will offer a bit of everything… shade, lake, gentle climbs, flat areas, sunny patches, fruit trees, redwoods/oaks/eucalyptus, vineyards, wildflowers, vistas, and more! Plan for approximately 2 ½ - 3 hours (including lunch break) and about 750 feet in elevation climb over the course of the hike.

We’ll meet in the upper parking lot, so turn right immediately after the fee kiosk. Remember to pay the entrance fee of $6.00 at the entrance kiosk. Plan to arrive at 9:45 a.m. for a prompt 10:00 a.m. departure. Pack a lunch since we’ll be eating on the trail.

We encourage you to walk at a pace that is safe and comfortable for you. The group will naturally spread out a bit. One of us will lead the group; the other will always be at the tail end of the group. Please wear sturdy hiking shoes, dress in layers, and bring plenty of water. As always, please take all valuables with you rather than leaving them in your car. Remember, no dogs are allowed on the trails. We will hike rain or shine, so dress accordingly.

Jack London loved this beautiful diverse property which he bought just over 100 years ago. Though he is best known as a writer of over 50 books, Jack London also took pride in the scientific farming techniques he tried out on this land. In fact, Jack claimed to enjoy his farming more than his writing! Come to the lake, and you’ll see why the Valley of the Moon Natural History Association is raising funds to restore the lake to the way it was when Jack London lived there. If you haven’t been to Jack London State Park recently, you may want to extend your visit to include the museum, cottage, or Wolf House ruins once our hike has concluded. Jack London State Park is located at 2400 London Ranch Road in Glen Ellen. If you need directions, you can access the park’s website at www.jacklondonpark.com .
