Mary & Martin Hikes
Saturday, February 15, 9:50 a.m.
On Sunday, February 15th, we’ll meet in Sugarloaf Ridge State Park for a hike to the waterfall and beyond. This hike is a beautiful rainy-season hike! Our 5.5 mile, 3 hour hike will have some up and down climbing. Our total elevation gain will be about 900 feet.
We’ll meet at the main parking lot, on the left, just beyond the park kiosk. From the parking lot, we’ll follow Canyon Trail through its green ferns and emerald moss-covered rocks. We’ll descend 450 feet to the base of the waterfall along Sonoma Creek. From there, we’ll ascend using Pony Gate Trail. After reaching a vista point, we’ll climb an additional 300 feet until we reach Lower Bald Mountain Trail. Then we’ll begin our much-earned descent toward the Observatory. We’ll eat lunch near the Observatory, and look forward to the next two miles of relatively flat hiking as we make our way back to our parking area.
Remember to bring correct change and pay the $6 entrance fee at the kiosk. Plan to arrive at 9:50 a.m. for a prompt 10:00 a.m. departure. Pack a lunch since we’ll be eating on the trail. In case the ground or table is wet, consider bringing a plastic bag to sit on during lunch.
Please wear sturdy hiking shoes as the trails can be slippery and muddy after rain. Also, there is a chance we may need to cross small streams by rock-hopping. Dress in layers and bring water. We will hike rain or shine, so dress accordingly. As with any hike, make sure you are responsibly prepared by packing your personal first aid items, such as band aids, blister pads, pain reliever, etc.
Sugarloaf Park is on Adobe Canyon Drive, off Highway 12. Going east from Santa Rosa, turn left on Adobe Canyon Drive right after Landmark Winery. Follow Adobe Canyon Drive to the end where you’ll enter Sugarloaf Ridge State Park.
Anyone who wishes to carpool can meet at the St. Francis Shopping Center near the corner of Calistoga Road and Highway 12 in Santa Rosa at 9:30 a.m. Meet in the parking row closest to Calistoga Road. Since this is a "leaderless" carpool, it is up to those who are there to organize it.

Dave and Bill Hikes
A mid-winter hike at Sugarloaf RidgeSaturday, February 21, 9:45 a.m.
Join Bill and Dave on Saturday, February 21 for a 3 hour gentle hike of 5.5 miles at Sugarloaf Ridge State Park. Plan to meet at the main parking lot at 9:45 AM for a prompt 10:00 AM departure. Our hike will consist of 2 loops from the parking lot. We’ll first hike a 2 mile lower loop taking in the waterfall and then follow up with a 3.5 mile upper loop with lunch at the big leaf maple heritage tree and a stop at the former Camp Butler. The total elevation gain for both loops is 800 feet. Plan to wear layered clothing, bring a lunch and ample liquids. We hike rain or shine and don’t forget there is a vehicle charge to enter the park ($6 or $5 for seniors. Bring correct change).
This hike is co-sponsored by the Valley of the Moon Natural History Association and California State Parks.
