Wildflower of the Month - June

Yellow Mariposa Lily

(Calochortus luteus) Lily family

Height 6” to 18” varies

The Yellow Mariposa Lily is common in our parks starting in late May and becomes profuse during June.

Look for this beauty in sunny grasslands and foothill woodland areas.

Currently you can find patches on Pony Gate trail in Sugarloaf and throughout Annadel.

Can you find this wildflower?

?

Crimson Columbine aka Western Columbine

(Aquilegia formosa) Buttercup family

Plant height 6” to 3’ and the flower is 2” wide

Unlike the Yellow Mariposa Lily, the Crimson Columbine is not as common but is well worth the search.

Find this lovely flower in open woodlands, on banks and near seeps. I usually find it in the damp areas of our parks.

Don’t be fooled! Even though the flower is bright red, it is easy to walk by and miss. Good luck!
